Meteorologist
Dear Meteorologist,
We are students at Kearny High School, researching about air pollution and we have some unanswered questions we would like to ask. My group and I are well informed about air pollution. We are aware that this affects us as people as well as to plants. We have the basic background knowledge about air pollution and we were wondering if you, as an expert, can help us, so we can learn more about air pollution.
For starters, we are aware that air pollution is an atrocious thing to our environment and society. Although air pollution has turned into a better carbon dioxide machine, it still affects the plants and other things. Air pollution is a big environment threat. Us using cars as transportation and all the gas the factories release makes our air really dirty. We would like to know what air pollution is made of so we can put a stop to it. What is air pollution necessarily made of? Air pollution is contaminating our air more and more each day.
Another point we came across to while researching is that air pollution affects our health. Air pollution can cause lung cancer because of all the chemicals out in the air. Air pollution play a role in asthma attacks. We as people need to stop contaminating. Does the rate of increase in air pollution per year affect the increase of asthma attacks per year? Air pollution causes health problems to a lot of people, it is a health hazard, and we need to think of something to put an end to it.
Lastly, we have researched about air pollution solutions. We came across that one thing we can do to reduce pollution is changing our transportation. Since cars, truck, bus, and trains contaminate the air, we can walk and or use a bike as transportation instead. For some people this can be a hard change because some may have a far job or other places they may need may be hard. Besides changing transportation, what are some other things we, as a society, can do to reduce air pollution.
After our research my group and I are very well informed about air pollution, but not quite satisfied. Air pollution affects the environment as well as our health. We are aware that there are some solutions and we are writing this letter to you so that you can inform us a little bit more. Thank you for taking time out of your day to read this letter and taking time to give us information by answering our questions. We would be happy to hear some solutions so that we can inform our friends and family on how to reduce pollution. We want our planet to be fresh and clean and harm free.
Thank you again,
Marlen Norato-Jacobo, Lyna Huynh, Marlon Norato-Jacobo, and Levi Brown
We send this letter to the following meterologists:
Hello Marlen, Lyna, Marlon, and Levi,
There are different types of air pollutants with different effects. Three of the most commonly discussed are: Ozone, which is an invisible gas that is good way up in the stratosphere because it helps to block harmful UV radiation from the Sun, but harmful when there's too much near the surface, especially to sensitive people such as asthmatics. Particulates, for example soot or smoke, which are also not good to breathe and creates smog. Finally there are greenhouse gases such as Carbon Dioxide.
You are absolutely correct that vehicles contribute a lot to air pollution, but there are ways to mitigate these effects without giving up on transportation altogether. Trains are very efficient, and can carry many people and goods long distances with very little pollution. So if 100 people took the train instead of each driving a car, that would have a big effect! Carpooling, and walking and biking as you mentioned are also choices that reduce air pollution.
